Setting up my homelab last year has made me all the more interested in the homelab podcasts with Techno Tim, and now I even understand their pain
Luckily I was able to scoop up some RAM and GPUs before all the price increases, but I went with 32GB, planning to upgrade to 128GB around Black Friday or Boxing Day, but then prices went 🏒
This increase is not entirely terrible however - companies are going to be forced to optimize software (especially games) to run well on older hardware, which means the we should hopefully see people holding onto their gear for longer, bringing down prices and reducing waste
As large AI companies chew through even more of our data, I agree that we are going to see a shift towards more self hosting, and I am all for it
I look forward to products like HexOS that can help the average Joe setup a home server and bring back some data sovereignty
So many people are decrying the use of AI to generate software for the homelab, but if it is running on your own hardware, and you have a decent firewall, then there is not a lot to worry about - in the end the point of the homelab is just that: to be a lab
And if someone starts the project and gets the ball rolling for an idea you had or have wanted software for but never had the time - why not come alongside and help secure it?
