The new live-action film is a loving homage to the original, faithfully recreating iconic moments and emotional beats. The core story remains intact, honoring the narrative that made the animated trilogy so special. However, in its effort to be grounded, the live-action format can feel a bit more somber. While the visuals are stunning and the dragons are magnificent, the original’s unique animation style brought a certain chaotic, playful energy and lifelike expressiveness to Toothless and Hiccup that is difficult to replicate with real actors and CGI creatures. The remake is a beautiful spectacle, but the animated version’s charming whimsy holds a special, unmatched place.
